Tadpoles: Animals

This monthly nature series, for young children, is themed from books by author Lois Ehlert.  This month’s theme will be oodles of animals! We will get to learn about the animal kingdom

Explorer’s Club:  Maple Sugaring

Join us each month to explore a new topic.  This month we will explore maple sugaring. Learn about the history of maple sugaring, the process to make syrup and even get a taste of the sweet stuff too!  Ages 6 and up.  $4 per child.

Night Hike & Bonfire and S’mores

Fairy Tales & Forecasting

Woodchucks (a.k.a. whistle pigs) don’t really know anything about the weather.  They are, however, part of a long list of animals that have been used for winter forecasting.  Let’s learn a bit of the natural and un-natural history of animal “weather wisdom” and come up with an end of winter forecast of our own.

Michigan’s Trappers History

Knitting in Nature: Sharing Stitches

Drop-in Owl Pellet Dissecting Day

Saturday, February 16th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Oakwoods Nature Center, Flat Rock

Stop in anytime between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to learn about owls, owl pellets, and get your very own owl pellet dissection kit. We will help you work through the pellet to discover what the owl had for lunch, and we will attempt to put the skeleton of the animal back together.

Winter Night Hike

Rum-running Stories

Sunday or Monday, February 17th or 18th at 2 p.m.

The Detroit River was a pretty busy place during Prohibition.  With tremendous amounts of illegal liquor entering the United States from Canada during the 1920’s and early 1930’s, stories abound.  Join some young “0ld timers’ as you travel back to the era of blind pigs, rum-running and panther sweat.  Participants are urged to tell a few stories of their own!

Canvasbacks from the Cove
